Emigre Filosofia

Filosofia is a serif font designed digitally by Zuzana Licko, and published in 1996 for Emigré, a digital foundry founded in California by Licko herself and Rudy VanderLans, both 'emigrants': the former from Slovakia, the latter from Holland.
This typeface is a personal interpretation of the Bodoni, designed by her without referring to a particular model among the many existing prototypes, but working almost from memory after a careful study of the various reworkings of Bodoni's lettering.
With the release of Filosofia in 1996, an unexpected collaboration was also born. The announcement poster for Filosofia, 'It's their Bodoni', designed by Massimo Vignelli, marked the end of the 'war' triggered by a 1991 interview in which Vignelli himself had criticised Emigre Font, describing it as 'a rubbish factory'.
